(10/10/18) CLASS Confirmation Email Has Changed

The format of the CLASS confirmation email for ad hoc orders and subscription orders was changed on 10/10/18. This change was implemented to prevent the possibility of CLASS sending an unreasonable number of emails to you. CLASS will now combine multiple order confirmation emails into one. This action has the potential of including both ad hoc and subscription orders in one notification. This will occur if more than ten orders are created within one minute. The subject line will contain a string of order and subscription numbers, while the body of the email will contain the information for each order. Unfortunately, some users running scripts dependent on information contained in the email may have been impacted by this change.

If you have questions or a request to disable this feature please contact the CLASS Help Desk.

(03/17/17) S-NPP Data Products Incorrect over the Southern Hemisphere

Details/Specifics of Change: IDPS VIIRS Moderate products and NDE downstream NUCAPS, VPW, VHP products are impacted due to incorrect S-NPP VIIRS Cloud Mask over the Southern Hemisphere

KEY POINTS:
-Significant areas of the Southern Hemisphere, especially Antarctica, are incorrectly labeled as “snow/ice free.”
-The error is not seen in the Northern Hemisphere (NH).
-VIIRS products for the Southern Hemisphere are impacted in regions of snow and ice.
-VIIRS Gridded Snow/Ice Rolling Tiles are also incorrect over the Southern Hemisphere.
-The root cause is incorrect processing of the NOAA Global Automated Multi-sensor Snow/Ice (GMASI) ancillary data.
-Developers are currently working to implement a fix.

OSTST announcement
******************

Dear OSTST members,

Last week the Jason-2 OGDR near real-time processing software (TM-NRT) was upgraded to version 3.0 at both NOAA and EUMETSAT. This is a major system upgrade from the previous version (2.3), but has minimal impact on users. There are no format changes to the products. TM-NRT-V3 contains a new internal ftp module, provides a common processing package for both Jason-2 and SARAL/Altika, and corrects a few minor anomalies within the OGDR products. The correction of these anomalies is the only difference in data content that end users will observe:

- Several one-byte flags were incorrectly defaulted to 0 vs. 127. They now have a proper _FillValue of 127.

- Four generic processing algorithms didn't properly handle defaults values. These have all been corrected.

- The flag 'alt_state_flag_tracking_mode_20hz' was set to 0, indicating split-gate tracking, when it should have been 1, indicating median tracking mode. The flag is now correctly set to 1 during median tracking.

- The construction of 'net_instr_corr_swh_ku' was incorrect due to a calculation with a wrong bit number. This has been corrected.

- A few netCDF variable attributes (NOT variable names) were misspelled or contained typographical errors that have been corrected:

=============================================================================
variable variable_attribute change from V2.3 to V3.0
=============================================================================
lon comment Greenwich spelling corrected
lon_20hz comment Greenwich spelling corrected
orb_state_flag_rest comment meaning of flag state '8' corrected
model_dry_tropo_corr standard_name troposphere spelling corrected
model_wet_tropo_corr standard_name troposphere spelling corrected
rad_wet_tropo_corr standard_name troposphere spelling corrected
rad_wet_tropo_corr quality_flag "and" added before "interp_flag_tb"
=============================================================================

None of these changes should necessitate changes to your processing code.

Due to unexpected earth terminal testing at the NOAA/Wallops ground station, a single (short) OGDR was produced with TM-NRT-V3.0 prior to the planned transition on the morning of 14-Jan-2010. This single OGDR is JA2_OPN_2PcS056_139_20100113_200656_20100113_202210.

All OGDRs produced by both NOAA and EUMETSAT after the planned transition are now based on TM-NRT-V3.0. This can be confirmed via the 'references' global netCDF attribute: "L1 library=V3.1p1, L2 library=V3.0p1, Processing Pilot=V3-0p1p2p3".

The last OGDR produced with TM-NRT-V2.3 is:

JA2_OPN_2PcS056_146_20100114_015512_20100114_035302

The first (full) OGDR produced with TM-NRT-V3.0 is:

JA2_OPN_2PcS056_148_20100114_035302_20100114_053835

CNES's offline processing software has been updated this week to the same V3.0 core processing (SPA component) as TM-NRT-V3. The minor anomalies listed above will therefore also be corrected in the V3.0 IGDRs and GDRs.

Operationally, the last IGDR produced with SPA-V2.3 was:

JA2_IPN_2PcP056_226_20100117_044720_20100117_054333

and the first IGDR produced with SPA-V3.0 was:

JA2_IPN_2PcP056_227_20100117_054333_20100117_063946

Today CNES has reprocessed the IGDRs for cycle-056 passes 148 to 245 to be consistent with the OGDR products based on TM-NRT-V3. These V3.0 IGDRs will be available via AVISO and CLASS shortly.

Finally, the GDRs for cycle-052 and beyond will be produced with SPA-V3.0. The latest cycle-051 GDRs were produced with SPA-V2.3, and will be released shortly.

If you have any questions regarding the new version 3.0 OGDR/IGDR/GDRs, please contact one of the Jason-2 Measurement Systems Engineers:

(08/05/09) Public Release of the Jason-2 Version 'T' Geophysical Data Records

The Jason-2/OSTM Geophysical Data Records (GDRs), version 'T', are now available to the public. The version 'T' calibration/validation GDRs have been extensively validated by the Ocean Surface Topography Science Team (OSTST), who found that these GDRs are demonstrating excellent data quality, and consistency with the Jason-1 version 'c' GDRs. As a result, at their June 2009 meeting in Seattle, the OSTST recommended the release of the Jason-2/OSTM Version 'T' GDRs as is.

The public are invited to proceed with analyses based on this version 'T' release of the Jason-2 GDRs. All these products are available since launch, 20-Jun-2008, from the following two sources:

1) CNES/AVISO’s site :    http://www.aviso.oceanobs.com/index.php?id=1458
2) NOAA's CLASS site :    http://www.class.noaa.gov

These products are computed at CNES in NetCDF file format. 3 types of files are available:

- a GDR-T native NetCDF formatted datasets ("standard product");
- a reduced 1Hz subset of the full dataset (SSHA-GDR-T);
- an expert sensor product containing the full radar-echo waveforms (SGDR-T).

For details and limitations, please refer to :

(06/08/09) Jason-2 level-2 data files corrupted

Due to a software bug in the data processing system at ESPC, 15 GDR/S-GDR files and 102 IGDR/S-IGDR/IGDR-SSHA files were corrupted during transmission to CLASS. The bug was fixed on 12-May-2009, and no further file corruption has been observed. The corrupt GDR/S-GDR files have all been replaced by 17:12 UTC on 15-May-2009. The corrupt IGDR/S-IGDR/IGDR-SSHA files have all been replaced by 14:35 UTC on 28-May-2009. The complete analysis of the level-2 data affected by corruption, including the names, sizes, and date of availability of the replacement files, is described in this separate report "An Analysis of Corrupt Level-2 Jason-2/OSTM Data at NOAA/CLASS". We apologize for this inconvenience, and recommend that you re-download any of the files documented in this report.

(03/04/09) DMSP F-15 data from the 22 Vertical GHz Channel has deteriorated

Details of Outage

NRL has been able to assess the magnitude of the RADCAL interference
on F15 SSMI. The F-15 orbit plane is precessing westward which has resulted
in the coincidence with F13. Their study showed that the large increase in
interference from 2/4 to 2/11. They confirmed that there is significant
orbital variations of the RADCAL interference with maximum approaching 5K.
Also, the orbital variability creates a very difficult problem to address
since it requires a correction scheme that depends on orbital position of
the S/C. Therefore, the F-15 SSMI 22V channel and associated EDRs are
unusable until a new correction algorithm is developed and/or the sensor
stabilizes.

At this moment, FNMOC is still leaving the data ingest on inside of
the FNMOC since their NWP data assimilation model has a good QC program at
the front end rejecting the bad obs. We would like to know if our SSM/I
operational users still need the data feed. If so, please send an email to
Vincent.Tabor@noaa.gov stating your requirement.  Also, please be
advised of the increasing level of interference and the degraded quality of the 22v
SDRs and associated EDRs.

FNMOC will continue to monitor the RADCAL interference and report
major changes. This information will be passes on to our users.  Please let
us know, if you have any questions.

(02/18/09) Jason-2 IGDR Replaced Data

On 18 February 2009 the Advanced Microwave Radiometer (AMR) and Poseidon-3 Altimeter characterization files used in the processing of Jason-2 products were updated. These files are used to characterize both instruments and the evolution of their accuracy over time. This update is part of the ongoing Jason-2 calibration/validation activities, focusing on the validation of the highest accuracy Jason-2 off-line products (GDR).

For the Jason-2 OGDRs the first file processed with the new characterization files was during pass #082 of cycle 23:

JA2_OPN_2PcS023_082_20090218_084414_20090218_101650
JA2_OPR_2PcS023_082_20090218_084414_20090218_101650
JA2_OPB_2PcS023_082_20090218_084414_20090218_101650

For the Jason-2 IGDRs, CLASS originally received pass #001 of cycle 23 based on the older characterization files, but has subsequently received the following files based upon the new 18-Feb-2009 characterization files:

JA2_IPN_2PcP023_001_20090215_044742_20090215_054355
JA2_IPR_2PcP023_001_20090215_044742_20090215_054355
JA2_IPS_2PcP023_001_20090215_044742_20090215_054355

The version of these files for pass #001 of cycle 23 are now based on the newest characterization files.

The expected changes to the sea surface height and wind speed values in going from the old to the new characterization files are as follows:

-7.2 mm on sea surface height
+0.2 m/s on wind speed

(01/28/09) GOES-12 Thruster leak

*Update:*

The GOES-12 navigation has been corrected as of the 20:15Z image.

***Details of the Outage:*

At 22:40Z on Jan 27, 2009, GOES-12 had a re-occurrence of a thruster
leak which caused a Yaw momentum build up.  This caused the navigation
to be off by approximately 20 scan lines.  As of 17:15Z the navigation
is still off and engineers are working on the problem.  It should be
fixed within a couple of hours.
