Data Description

Defense Meteorological Satellite Program - The DMSP is a Department of Defense (DoD) program which is responsible for designing, building, launching, and operating polar-orbiting environmental satellites. Data collected are from four instruments: Special Sensor Microwave Imager (SSM/I), Special Sensor Microwave Imager/Sounder (SSM/IS), Special Sensor Microwave Sounder (SSM/T), and the Special Sensor Microwave Water Vapor Profiler (SSM/T2). When the first SSM/IS instrument, aboard the F-16 platform, became operational in November 2005, it combined and extended the imaging and sounding capabilities of three previously separate DMSP microwave instruments: SSM/I, SSM/T and SSM/T2.
