Data Description

JPSS VIIRS Products (Non-Granule) (JPSS_NGRN) - Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite (VIIRS) sensor data records and intermediate products from the Joint Polar Satellite System (JPSS) have been used to generate these VIIRS Level 3 non-granule products. The products were developed by the NOAA/NESDIS Center for Satellite Application and Research (STAR) and were produced within a near real-time environment at the NOAA/NESDIS Office of Satellite and Product Operations (OSPO). The VIIRS Polar Winds cover the Arctic and Antarctic from 65 degrees latitude poleward. Tropospheric winds are measured by tracking the motion of cloud features in the overlapping region of three successive orbits. A triplet of images is used to facilitate consistency checking and quality control. Wind products include wind speed, direction, and height at high latitudes. The VIIRS Green Vegetation Fraction (GVF) dataset is used as an input to land surface models to provide a better characterization of the earth surface. NESDIS will evaluate the vegetation environmental data records, compare VIIRS composites to the legacy baseline for consistency, implement algorithm enhancements, and tailor the products for use by NWP models and continuity requirements. The VIIRS Vegetation Health Products (VHP) algorithm provides weekly estimates of the Vegetation Condition Index (VCI), Temperature Condition Index (TCI) and Vegetation Health Index (VHI). These indices are designed to characterize moisture (VCI), thermal (TCI) and total vegetation health (VHI) conditions in response to weather impacts. The VHP algorithm requires a smoothed Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) and Brightness Temperature (BT) from VIIRS. A 15-week time series smoothing technique is used. Data in the middle of the time series present the best result, and so the data of the 7th week (prior) is the final product. VIIRS-based products provide mission continuity from the AVHRR on NOAA and MetOp series satellites. These archived products are distributed in the netCDF-4 file format with metadata attributes included. Please expand "Details - Metadata, Documentation" section below for more details. Individual product (Datatype) description, documentation, and possible bulk access options are available under the "Product Details" link.

Notes

(Posted 09/21/2021) The VIIRS Annual Surface Type (AST) product is a 1 km global surface type map produced using a classification scheme developed by the International Geosphere Biosphere Program (IGBP). This product includes both annual maps and a climatology map extending from 2012 to the present. The VIIRS AST product is affiliated with the JPSS_NGRN data family, but is not accessible through the CLASS search and order interface. For data access and product documentation visit the VIIRS AST Landing Page.

(Posted 02/24/2020) The 4km VIIRS Vegetation Health Products (VHP) will be discontinued after April 30, 2020. These products will be replaced by the 1km VHP which you can order now from this page below. Archive start date is April 16, 2019.

(Posted 04/24/2018) In September 2017, the CLASS 'S-NPP Data Exploitation Granule Data (NDE_L2)' and 'S-NPP Data Exploitation Daily (NDE_DAILY)' data family names were changed to 'JPSS Sounder Products (JPSS_SND)' and 'JPSS VIIRS Products (Non-Granule) (JPSS_NGRN)' respectively.

Users who pull this data from the NDE FTP download area should note that the 'NDE-DAILY/' and 'NDE-L2/' FTP directory folder names will change to match the web page changes on (or around) May 16, 2018. The new FTP folder names for these products will be named 'JPSS-SND/' and 'JPSS-NGRN/'.

Also note that the VIIRS Active Fires EDR data that was previously located NDE-L2/ FTP folder, will be moved to the JPSS-GRAN/ FTP folder. Users with scripts or automated downloads should adjust accordingly.

(Posted 12/06/2017) Daily tar files of the products for the most recent 90 days are available via anonymous FTP download at ftp://ftp-jpss.avl.class.noaa.gov/.

(Posted 12/06/2017) The VIIRS Smoothed Normalized Difference Vegetation Index and VIIRS Vegetation Health Indices products are the final version of the NDE VIIRS Vegetation Health products (4km Veg Health and Smoothed NDVI), and are produced with an 8 week delay.
