Data Description

JPSS VIIRS IP Operational (VIIRS_IPNG) Non-Gridded
The Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite (VIIRS) is a scanning radiometer that collects visible and infrared imagery and radiometric measurements of the land, atmosphere, cryosphere, and oceans. VIIRS Intermediate Products (IP) are products generated at a specific point in the data processing stream, stored for a finite period of time, and used internally as an input to other data processing applications, such as in the production of Sensor Data Records (SDR) and Environmental Data Records (EDR). Some VIIRS IPs have become Environmental Data Records (EDR) produced as NOAA Enterprise Products. The JPSS_GRAN data family include five products that originated as IPs: VIIRS Ice Concentration, VIIRS Surface Reflectance, VIIRS Aerosol Optical Thickness, VIIRS Cloud Optical Properties and VIIRS Parallax Corrected Cloud Mask. VIIRS IP products are produced by the NOAA Environmental Satellite, Data, and Information Service (NESDIS) and are distributed by the Comprehensive Large Array-Data Stewardship System (CLASS).

Notes

(Posted 11/13/2025) - On November 11th 2025 at 11:29 UTC, the S-NPP VIIRS instrument experienced an anomaly with the rotating telescope assembly. Engineers were able to restore the instrument to an operational state by November 12th 2025 16:29:18 UTC. All data from this time frame is unrecoverable.

(Posted 02/28/2025) - Notes regarding the JPSS geolocation change made on February 24, 2025:

  • As of February 24, 2025 all NOAA-20 and NOAA-21 VIIRS Moderate Ellipsoid geolocation (GMODO) was discontinued.
  • Users are directed to use the VIIRS Moderate Terrain Corrected geolocation (GMTCO).
  • S-NPP VIIRS Moderate Ellipsoid geolocation will continue to be delivered, but not associated with any S-NPP Bright Pixel IP.
  • Starting on February 24, 2025, CLASS packages the VIIRS Bright Pixel IP with the associated Moderate Terrain Corrected geolocation (GMTCO).
  • Orders for VIIRS Bright Pixel IPs prior to February 24, 2025 will be packaged with Ellipsoid geolocation (GMODO).

(Posted 09/13/2023) - Please note, CLASS offers a reprocessed version (pre 05/01/2020) of this data using the improved algorithms. See the RPVIIRSNG products search page for details.

(Posted 06/24/2020) - NOTE: A number of legacy JPSS products within this family are no longer being produced as of 2020-06-24. Please refer to the list of deprecated products along with the corresponding replacement products here.

With the release of Block 2.0 on 3/8/2017, the VIIRS Cloud Mask (CM) IP product will become an EDR product. If you subscribe to the VIIRS CM IP, please create a new VIIRS_EDR subscription for this product.
