    JPSS VIIRS SDR Operational (VIIRS_SDR)
    The Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite (VIIRS) is a scanning radiometer that collects visible and infrared imagery and radiometric measurements of the land, atmosphere, cryosphere, and oceans. Level-1b Sensor Data Records (SDR) from VIIRS are the calibrated and geolocated radiance and reflectance data produced from the Raw Data Records. This data family includes 22 VIIRS SDRs: 16 moderate-resolution, narrow-spectral-band products at 750 meter resolution, five imaging-resolution, narrow-spectral-band products at 375 meter resolution and one Day-Night Band imaging broadband product at 750 meter resolution. VIIRS SDRs are used as input to produce multiple Environmental Data Records (EDR). VIIRS SDR data obtained from the NOAA Comprehensive Large Array-Data Stewardship System (CLASS) are distributed as aggregated 5.6 minute files consisting of four granules in the Hierarchical Data Format v.5 (HDF5) with metadata attributes included.

Notes

(Posted 11/13/2025) - On November 11th 2025 at 11:29 UTC, the S-NPP VIIRS instrument experienced an anomaly with the rotating telescope assembly. Engineers were able to restore the instrument to an operational state by November 12th 2025 16:29:18 UTC. All data from this time frame is unrecoverable.

(Posted 02/28/2025) - Notes regarding the JPSS geolocation change made on February 24, 2025:

  • As of February 24, 2025 all S-NPP, NOAA-20, and NOAA-21 VIIRS Imagery Ellipsoid geolocation (GIMGO) and all NOAA-20 and NOAA-21 VIIRS Moderate Ellipsoid geolocation (GMODO) were discontinued.
  • Users are directed to use the S-NPP, NOAA-20, and NOAA-21 VIIRS Imagery and Moderate Terrain Corrected geolocation (GITCO and GMTCO).
  • S-NPP VIIRS Moderate Ellipsoid geolocation (GMODO) will continue to be delivered, but not associated with any S-NPP VIIRS Moderate Band SDRs.
  • Starting on February 24, 2025, CLASS packages the VIIRS Imagery Band SDRs with the associated Imagery Terrain Corrected geolocation (GITCO) and the VIIRS Moderate Band SDRs with the associated Moderate Terrain Corrected geolocation (GMTCO).
  • Orders for VIIRS SDRs prior to February 24, 2025 will be packaged with the Ellipsoid geolocation.

(Posted 06/01/2018) - Many products from NOAA-20 are now available through CLASS back to Beta Maturity. Please note that the start dates listed below for each datatype apply to SNPP files. The start dates for all products by maturity levels by satellite id are available on NOAA's STAR website at https://www.star.nesdis.noaa.gov/jpss/AlgorithmMaturity.php. Under each date there is a link to the full review of the product along with the latest readme on the last column. We encourage all users to assess product maturity before ordering and applying the data.

Beginning on August 11-14, 2014, CLASS started receiving the majority of JPSS data in gzip compressed format. The file names remained the same. Other than the file size being smaller, users do not need to make any changes to their software to use the data.
